Egret sighed as she turned to the last page in her book. She hated reading the last page. The last pages were an ending and every time she finished a book she felt the imaginary world dissolve around her. Her one protection from the harsh realities of the real world gone.
Egret perched delicately on the railing that ran along the roof of the orphanage, her bare feet finding purchase on the thin railing easily, her new crimson coat, a gift from Elizabeth, hung down behind her occasionally flaring up in the wind. Her golden bangs covered eyes that could easily be compared to burning turquoise, while the wind had removed her hat a while causing her hair to twist and swirl as if it hand a mind of its own. Garbed in a simple white dress, Egret made no attempt to cover herself as the wind threatened to expose her knickers.
